Doritos announced the followup to last years super successful “Crash the Super Bowl” contest for the 2008 Super Bowl… and once again, a consumer contest is at the center of it all.
This time around, Doritos isn’t looking for an ad, they are looking for a good tune. Unsigned bands can submit an original song “inspired by the musician's passion and creativity based on his or her own bold or intense experiences”.
The song does not have to be about the brand. In USA Today, Frito-Lay Marketing VP, Ann Mukherjee said "This gives consumers a stage to voice their creativity on the biggest stage possible. Consumers who are loyal to a brand know the best way to express what a brand is about."
Ten videos will be selected by the judges and posted on the new Doritos Second Life-like site www.snackstrongproductions.com in December for consumers to view and vote for their favorites. The voting for the 10 semifinalists will start on 12/17/07 and end on 12/31/07. The 3 with the most votes will then be selected as finalists. Voting on the final 3 will begin on 1/7/08 and continue to 1/27/08. Frito-Lay’s agency will create a music video of all three finalists and the winning song will air during the game... and receive a record contract.
Prepare to be inundated with amateurs singing for fame at the beginning of the year. The next American Idol season starts again just a couple weeks before the game … which is of course on Fox.
