The NFL announced today that fans will pick the NFL's Super Bowl ad again this year. This time around, fans will vote for their favorite story of players talking about their humorous experiences in the NFL. You may remember, the NFL reached out to fans for their ad last year. In that promotion, fans submitted ad concepts that were produced by the league for broadcast.
Here’s how it working this year. Fans can visit www.nfl.com/superad between November 29 and December 26 to view brief videos of 48 players telling their stories. Fans vote for their favorites on the site. On December 27, the final 8 stories (one from each of the NFL’s divisions) will be selected for the “playoff round”. Fans can then vote for their favorite of their final 8 over the next 11 days.
Some of the player stories include:
- Patriots' Rosevelt Colvin, who confesses he got lost on his way to the first mini-camp and arrived with two-minutes to spare drenched in sweat.
- Seahawks' Matt Hasselbeck, who talks about the first time he received fan mail only to discover it was from someone who wanted Hasselbeck to get him an autograph from Brett Favre.
- Cowboys' Jason Witten, who admits he neglected to bring donuts to a team meeting causing the offensive line to tie him to the goal post and pour ice on him.
The winning story will be made into a commercial by the NFL and aired during the game.
"User-guided" instead of "user generated" ads seem to the be theme this year. Both Doritos and the NFL are soliciting guidance from consumers on the concept and letting the experts create ads.
